These tracks were recorded in a hurry in Spring 2023. They present if an overall improvised material, a state of my research, at that time still at a relatively early stage with a setup that includes acoustic guitar and DIY radio transmission as main media with gravitating voice, harmonica and body percussions. Some extended techniques on guitar, with the most simple means, emphasise the timbral transversality of the instrument. The microFM radio system as no audio input but is setup on guitar and floor, reacting to body movements, and the guitar becomes a 'theremin' like instrument.
Through timbres and themes of repetition, you hear my work on traditional soundings and experimental music traditions, in the interfering radio waves, my engagement with natureculture systems. This is a continuity of Aurality, my research since 2018, with a more accurate focus on oral traditions / transmissions - if grounded in my native Southern France occitan tradition, emphasising the transversalities and relationallies across all musical traditions.
This research grew since 2022 as an array of vibrational practices under the name Chaosmos - a pool of possibles, of shapes to come, of alternatives. In June and October 2023 it shaped as two 4-days residencies / festivals in Berlin, the Mending series - mending as an advocate to simple gestures of care. A place and time for musical encounters with local scenes improvised and experimental music this residencies gave birth to collaborations with Mazen Kerbaj, Diane Barbé, Laure Boer, Marina Cyrino, Camila Nebbia, Steve Heather, Rieko Okuda, Kris Limbach, Tony Elieh among others.
So this album works as an opening. For more chaosmic vibrations, and more Pagan Psalms, are to come.
Take care / much love,
Niko
If you listened to the wind, when it blows in the beech trees and bellow in the air;
If you know how to listen to the wind, when it leads its clouds like great sea birds, and when it bellowed in the air with its throat of frost;
if you have sometimes heard the fountain and the river and the leaf cry, the whisper of the ripe grass in the meadows,
you may know what I have to say.
You already know it.
